Toyota to be main sponsor of Vietnam’s top league in 2015

Toyota to be main sponsor of Vietnam’s top league in 2015

Monday, December 29, 2014, 13:02 GMT+7

Toyota will be the main sponsor of Vietnam’s top-flight football league for the 2015 season, set to start next Sunday, with a reported sponsorship package worth around VND100 billion (US$4.8 million).

Clubs competing in the V-League said they received documents from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) confirming the sponsoring role of Japanese car manufacturer Toyota in 2015, and were requested to fix the logo of the sponsor on players’ jerseys.

However, the exact worth of the sponsorship has not been officially announced. Earlier, a source of Thanh Nien newspaper revealed that Toyota will pay around $4.8 million to sponsor the V-League in 2015.

Buta Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper source said the sum will be no less than VND30 billion ($1.44 million).

The signing ceremony for the deal between Toyota and VFF will be held tomorrow in Hanoi.

Club complaints

At the shareholders’ meeting of the Vietnam Professional Football (VPF) joint stock company under the VFF held on Saturday in Ho Chi Minh City, representatives of V-League clubs protested several pecuniary penalties and rules of the VFF.

VPF is now in charge of running football competitions in Vietnam.

Thanh Hoa FC said they were fined a total of VND600 million ($28,800) for three violations in the 2014 season, but they still did not know which regulation they had contravened.

Nguyen Van Long, a Dong Nai FC representative, said his club was fined VND20 million ($962) for not singing the national anthem at the start of a match, but he denied the violation.

Nguyen Hong Thanh from Song Lam Nghe An FC accused the VFF and VPF of poorly organizing the coming season since it is to kick off in six days but the clubs do not know the number of foreign players they are allowed to register.

Doan Nguyen Duc, chairman of Hoang Anh Gia Lai, protested the VPF regulation stating that each V-League has to pay a minimum of VND30 billion ($1.44 million) to play in the top-tier V-League.

“For clubs with good youth training programs such as Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Dong Thap, each needs to spend less than VND12 billion ($721,200) a season,” he said, adding that the biggest investment is for the purchase of players.

A club’s spending during a season is an internal matter of that club, Duc stressed. The 2015 V-League will feature 14 clubs, who represent the 14 provinces and cities with the most developed football programs in the nation.

The competition will be organized in three stages with two breaks, starting on January 4 and closing on September 20.

The league will pause from February 15 to April 12 for players to take part in the qualifiers of the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship in Malaysia, being held from March 23 to 31; and from May 3 to June 28 so the Vietnamese national team can attend the 28th SEA Games in Singapore.
