Kim is one of the two transnational drug traffickers who had been hunted worldwide by the Interpol since 2012. The man and his compatriot, Lee Tae Hee, 41, engaged in illegally transporting synthetic drugs from Vietnam to South Korea, with the aid of other people, Colonel Giap said, citing the case file. They stashed drugs under clothes, electronics, and other goods and sent them from Vietnam to South Korea through express delivery services. They made all drug deals with their partners through the Internet and by telephone. From October 2011 to January 2012, Kim and Lee were successful in 18 times of carrying drugs between the two countries.  In October 2012, South Korean anti-drug police detected their acts and issued a special wanted notice. They then fled to Vietnam and lived under different covers to avoid being found by local police. Lee disguised himself as a businessman coming from South Korea to seek investment opportunities. He frequented many bars and discotheques in Hanoi and spent the money gained from drug trafficking on pleasure activities there. When he ran out of money, he committed a swindle in the capital city and was arrested by local police. Meanwhile, Kim worked many jobs to make a living in the same city, from a travel agent to a land broker. He even acted as a guide to take South Korean expats to places of debauchery in Hanoi.

After a long time of search, Hanoi police arrested Kim on December 9 when he just arrived from Ho Chi Minh City.
