-- Vietnam will hold an election on May 22 for the 14th tenure of the National Assembly and for the People’s Councils at all levels for the 2016-2021 tenure, according to a resolution released by the National Assembly Standing Committee on Friday.

-- Vietnam has requested that the International Civil Aviation Organization correct the Sanya flight information region map – which includes Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago with the English words “Yong Shu airport – Sansha”. Vietnam has many times raised a voice protesting China’s establishment of the so-called “Sansha city” and its building of artificial islands and an airport in the area.

-- A truck was driving up the My Thuan Bridge in the southern province of Vinh Long on Friday when it suddenly slid backwards, crashing into a seven-seater car and overturned, when the driver, who eventually died in the accident, lost control of the vehicle.

-- Police in the north-central province of Nghe An are investigating a case in which a 46-year-old man died of unknown reason after being detained on suspicion of stealing assets on Thursday.

-- Vietnam’s Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh and Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Hiroshi Fukada signed Friday diplomatic notes on the first batch of Japanese Official Development Assistance worth more than 95 billion yen (US$812 million) for Vietnam in fiscal 2015.

-- Mobile carrier Vinaphone announced on Friday that it has become the first mobile network operator in Southeast Asia to successfully offer fourth-generation (4G) connection a speed of 600 Mbps.

-- Nearly 30 Vietnamese suppliers met with representatives of Walmart in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday to discuss what they should do to be qualified to selling goods to the world’s largest retailer.

-- The administration of the southern province of Kien Giang, which administers the island district of Phu Quoc, promised to create the best conditions for investors on the island at a forum called Phu Quoc Meeting on Friday.

-- Many banks in Vietnam are offering attractive deposit rates of more than 7 percent a year to make up for the capital shortage, after they have hugely invested in buying government bonds.
