-- Multiple artifacts and bone fragments have been found by an ongoing search at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City for a possible mass grave said to contain the remains of hundreds of Vietnamese soldiers killed in wartime.

-- Nine people have been killed and two others still missing following a heavy downpour and flood that have battered the northern provinces of Thai Nguyen, Ha Giang, Dien Bien, Hoa Binh and Cao Bang since last Thursday, according to Nguyen Duc Quang, deputy chief of office of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

-- The administration of Ho Chi Minh City is facing difficulty putting on sale around 3,000 state-owned houses to the public as the timeline of ownership of these houses cannot be easily determined due to a lack of relevant papers.

-- A series of scientific seminars on cosmology are being held in south-central Vietnam’s Binh Dinh Province by the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), with the first seminar revolving around neutrino, one of the elementary particles of the universe.

-- Despite efforts by the administration of central Thua Thien – Hue Province to crack down on illegal sand mining activities on its iconic Perfume River, the crime has reportedly continued between midnight and early mornings.

-- The plan to build Long Thanh International Airport in southern Vietnam’s Dong Nai Province has prompted land surrounding the 5,000-hectare area of the project to be heatedly sought after by both brokers and investors, despite experts warning of a possible real estate bubble.

-- A government decree last year requesting food companies in Vietnam to use iodized salt in place of regular salt in their production and processing of food has been met with strong objections from local businesses, who said their operation had been greatly disturbed by the new regulation.

-- The Nhan Co bauxite mining project in the Central Highlands’ Dak Nong Province is slated to enter official operation this month despite another bauxite megaproject in the region having been running at a loss of multimillion dollars.

-- Vietnam National Petroleum Group, or Petrolimex, has announced its plan to pay cash dividends to its shareholders from August 24 to 31, with a dividend payout ratio of 32.24 percent, or equivalent to a total of over VND3,736 billion (US$164.58 million).

-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc promised to hold the door open for Dutch businesses to invest in Vietnam when he met with around 400 local entrepreneurs during his official visit to the European country on Monday.

-- Three valuable ancient Vietnamese artifacts dating back to the country’s Bronze Age period will be up for auction on August 19 in Hanoi, according to state-owned Fifth National Auctioning Company.
