Well-known ballet to hit Hanoi this week

The well-known ballet “The Rite of Spring” will be brought back on Hanoi stage this week.

The performance, choreographed by Jean-Claude Gallotta, will be showcased during the second part of the show title “Khuc Giao Mua”. The first part will feature performances by local artists including violinists Le Tuan Anh and Ho Viet Khoa, pianist Dinh Thu Huong, cellist Nguyen Thanh Tu, and famed American pianist Anne Chamberlain.

Previously, the ballet was showcased in Ho Chi Minh City in June as part of activities to celebrate the France – Vietnam Year, to mark the ballet’s 100th birthday, and to honor its composer, Igor Stravinsky.

First performed in Paris in 1913 by Les Ballets Russes of Serge Diaghilev, with Nijinsky as choreographer, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, “Rite of Spring” created a wave of intense criticism with its strange dance and rhythmic music that had never been seen or heard before.

However, the introduction of this ballet is one of the most important landmarks of twentieth century music, bringing dance and music together into the modern era.

Originally, it had no plot but two main parts: "L'Adoration de la terre - The adoration of the earth" and the "Le Sacrifice - The sacrifice".

The Hanoi show will take place at 8pm on August 23 at the city’s Opera House, at 1 Trang Tien Street.
