High tide, rainstorm likely to inundate Ho Chi Minh City this week

High tide, rainstorm likely to inundate Ho Chi Minh City this week

Monday, September 28, 2015, 14:49 GMT+7

The high tide that started Monday on the Saigon and Dong Nai Rivers will possibly combine with rainstorms to submerge many areas in Ho Chi Minh City this week, the Southern Hydro-Meteorological Station has warned.

The tide will peak in the middle of the week, with the highest water level to be recorded at 1.5 meters in the Saigon River, the station said.

The peak time of the tide will coincide with a rainstorm that is forecast to hit the city during the same week, so this combination may inundate many locations in the locale.

The Steering Board for Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue has asked the People’s Committee of all districts, especially District 12, Thu Duc District, Binh Thanh District, Binh Tan District, Cu Chi District, and Hoc Mon District, to take measures to cope with the possible flooding.

Last week, a torrential rain struck Ho Chi Minh City, sinking many areas beneath up to over one meter of water, blocking traffic, and causing numerous vehicles to break down.

The prolonged rain, which turned a lot of streets into ‘rivers,’ was the heaviest ever in the city so far this year, news website VnExpress cited the Southern Hydro-Meteorological Station as saying.

In another weather development, powerful storm Dujuan is heading for Taiwan and some eastern coastal provinces of China, strengthening southwestern winds in the middle and southern areas of the East Vietnam Sea, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

The fierce winds will bring rain to southern Vietnam, mainly in the evening.

The southeastern region, Ho Chi Minh City, and coastal areas in the southwestern part of the country will have medium and heavy rains.

The rainy region will have been expanded to the south-central part by the weekend, the center said.
