Master of traditional Vietnamese music Professor Tran Van Khe has been hospitalized for two weeks because of health problems, local media reported Tuesday.
The 95-year-old professor was admitted to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City a fortnight ago due to elderly health issues. Prof. Khe’s relatives said that he is very weak, according to Phap Luat (Law) newspaper.
In recent years, he has regularly appeared in many activities dedicated to traditional music and culture.
However, Prof. Khe mainly travels by wheelchair due to several diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and lung-related problems.
Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper on Wednesday said that Prof. Khe was sent to the emergency ward at Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital on Tuesday in a state of breathlessness. His health condition has been monitored by doctors.
Prof. Khe was born in 1921 in My Tho City in southern Vietnam. He lived in Paris for decades and has nurtured his love for Vietnam’s traditional music since a young age.
The expert fulfilled his childhood passion for the music of his home country by working his way through college in France in the early 1950s.
He performed only traditional Vietnamese music on traditional instruments at a restaurant owned by a Vietnamese expat. His music melted the hearts of many, including his French audience.
Since then, he has dedicated himself to researching, promoting, and honoring his country’s music around the globe.
