An argument turned to tragedy in south-central Vietnam’s Khanh Hoa Province on Tuesday evening when a man killed his ex-wife and her son before committing suicide by setting the house on fire.

The couple had been married and divorced twice before tragedy struck.

Police in the province's Cam Ranh City said on Tuesday that autopsies were still being carried out to determine the cause of death of the three victims found in the remains of a burnt down house in the city.

According to police reports, the victims were T.H.D., 39, his ex-wife N.T.L., 40, and the woman’s son D.H.D., 13.

D. is a scooter taxi driver, while L. earns her living raising livestock.

Early investigations found that D. and L. had been married for the first time long ago and were then divorced for reasons not immediately clear.

A few years ago, the two rekindled their relationship and got married for a second time, settling down in Cam Loc Ward in Cam Ranh.

“Recently, the couple started arguing again so they got divorced for a second time,” said a senior Cam Ranh police officer.

“On Tuesday afternoon, D. went home and became engaged in a heated argument with L.

"The man then murdered his ex-wife and her son before setting fire to the house, killing himself.”

According to the couple’s neighbors, the quarrel began at around 6:30 pm, resulting in D. stabbing L. and her son D. to death with a knife.

“He then locked the front door, poured gasoline all over himself and lit it,” an eyewitness recalled.

“It was already too late by the time neighbours managed to break into the house.”
