Temperatures to soar as heatwave begins in northern, central Vietnam this week

A heatwave is forecast for northern and central Vietnam this week, raising the regions’ highest temperature to 38 degrees Celsius.

In northern localities, the average highs will be 35-37 degrees Celsius and above 38 degrees Celsius in some areas on Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

The mercury will remain over 35 degrees Celsius for 11-16 hours on a daily basis, while humidity will be around 50-65 percent.

The heatwave is expected to begin scorching central Vietnam around Monday and Tuesday and will linger until Friday.

During this period, temperatures of 35-38 degrees Celsius will be recorded in the localities from north-central Thanh Hoa Province to south-central Phu Yen Province.

It will remain over 35 degrees Celsius for 10-17 hours daily, while humidity will be around 45-60 percent.

Meteorological experts warned that the hot weather, combined with low humidity in the air and southwesterly winds, will pose a high risk of fire and explosion in residential areas and forests.

The weather condition can also cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke if people are exposed to high temperatures for a long time.

Residents are advised to drink a lot of water, ensure sufficient nutrition, and wear hats, sunglasses, and jackets when outside.
