Trash litters southern Vietnam expy post-Tet travel

Trash and foul odors blanket large stretches of a major freeway in Vietnam following the Lunar New Year travel season

Massive amounts of garbage have been strewn along the 200km-long Vinh Hao-Dau Giay Expressway, connecting Vietnam’s south-central and southern regions, as many travelers littered the route during the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, which concluded last Sunday.

The highest concentration of trash can be found at the intersection of National Highway 1 and the Vinh Hao-Phan Thiet Expressway, a section of the Vinh Hao-Dau Giay Expressway.

Furthermore, nearly every emergency stopping area is overflowing with trash.

Intersections along the remaining component of the route, the Phan Thiet-Dau Giay Expressway, which includes Ba Bau, National Highway 55, and DT-720, emit foul odors.

Pham Quoc Huy, managing director of the Vinh Hao-Phan Thiet Expressway, highlighted a significant increase in garbage accumulation on both sides of the expressway since the recent Lunar New Year holiday.

The new route, which commenced official operations in June 2023, has become a favorite of travelers between the south-central and southern regions.

“Travelers who brought food with them threw away packaging and plastic bottles at emergency stopping areas,” Huy noted, emphasizing the urgency for intervention.

Huy further added that expressway’s investor has urged that temporary management and operation units of the project deploy cleanup crews to address the litter issue.

There are currently no gas stations or rest stops on the entirety of the 200 kilometers route.

The construction of rest stops on this route is pending investor selection.
