A low-pressure area in the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea developed into a tropical depression on Thursday morning, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting reported.
As of 7:00 am on Thursday, the tropical depression was located above the southeastern coast of China’s Guangdong Province, packing wind speeds of 40-50km per hour.
It is expected to travel northwest in the next 24 hours and enter the mainland of Guangdong Province, before weakening into a low-pressure area.
The weather phenomenon will result in rough seas, strong gusts, and waves as high as three meters in the northern section of the East Vietnam Sea.
Meanwhile, a southwest monsoon is forecast to bring rains and thunderstorms to the central and southern parts of the East Vietnam Sea.
From Thursday to Sunday, downpours are in the forecast in northern Vietnam, with rainfall expected to reach 200 millimeters.
Rains and thunderstorms in central, Central Highlands, and southern regions are also expected to continue in the coming days.
Between Sunday and Monday, another low-pressure area may form in the middle section of the East Vietnam Sea and will likely evolve into a tropical depression, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting added.
