-- Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang paid a visit yesterday to the northern border province of Cao Bang to attend a ceremony to inaugurate the Saigon-Ban Gioc Resort and Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda.

Society:

-- The Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology has sent documents to request relevant agencies to coordinate in checking and inspecting fuel stations across the nation to prevent pumping fraud.

-- Da Nang Hospital in central Vietnam has received its first state-of-the-art machine for radiation therapy, which will go into operation by the end of this month. The US$1.3 million machine was manufactured by a UK firm.

-- Ho Chi Minh City will build parks at the two ends of the Binh Loi Bridge across the Saigon River. Construction will start in 2015 at an estimated cost of VND28.4 billion ($1.4 million).

-- Tan Cang-Hiep Phuoc Port in Nha Be District, Ho Chi Minh City, was inaugurated and received its first oil tanker on Monday. It can handle ships weighing up to 50,000 tonnes.

-- Hanoi is forecast to get hit by a cold spell in the coming days with temperatures likely falling to 9-10 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in northern mountainous areas may drop to 1-2 degrees Celsius.

-- The Vietnamese Ministry of Transport on Monday rejected a request by the administration of the Chinese city of Pingxiang to allow 1,000 vehicles carrying 1,500 people to enter Vietnam for tourism purposes. The ministry explained that Vietnam is “unable to ensure traffic safety and security.”

-- The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has suggested preserving part of the century-old Saigon Tax Trade Center located in the downtown area. The trade center is being torn down to make way for a skyscraper.

-- Nguyen Duc Kien, former deputy chairman of Asia Commercial Bank, was yesterday given a sentence of 30 years in prison for illegal trade, fraud and tax evasion at a court of appeals in Hanoi.

-- State officials in Hong Ngu Town of the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap have complained that they were forced to contribute a day of salary to the funding of fireworks displays to celebrate New Year on January 1.

Business:

-- Vietnam has exported its third batch of longan fruit to the U.S. market.

-- Samsung is considering taking part in the construction of Long Thanh International Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

-- The Vietnam Asset Management Company has purchased over VND100 trillion ($4.8 billion) in bad debts so far.

Sports:

-- Two football leagues of Vietnam and the Vietnam National Cup are to have new sponsors soon, according to a source close to the Vietnam Football Federation. The annual sponsorship will be worth VND30 to 40 billion (US$1.44 million to $1.9 million) a year. Eximbank has withdrawn after sponsoring the tournaments for four years.
