A high-level court in Hanoi on Thursday upheld the nine-year prison term that was previously handed down to a woman for spreading anti-state information.
The High People's Court in Hanoi conducted the court of second instance to consider the appeal of Pham Thi Doan Trang, 44, from the capital's Dong Da District on Thursday.
Trang was previously sentenced to nine years in jail for propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam during her first trial in December 2021.
The indictment showed that Trang possessed many documents, including a research report on the law on belief and religion, the content of which was fabricated to cause confusion among the people and distort the directions and policies of the state.
During her working session with police officers, Trang admitted that she was the co-author of the report on the law on belief and religion.
Trang and some other authors wrote this report in English, then translated it into Vietnamese, and posted it on their website.
The Hanoi People’s Procuracy also accused Trang of giving interviews to foreign media, during which she provided information that distorted the state's policies and guidelines.
However, Trang insisted that she was not guilty.
The trial panel asserted that the nine-year prison term is a suitable punishment for her crime.
The panel added that Trang’s action was a serious violation and posed danger to society.
