Scores of people stopped their vehicles on a temporarily-inaugurated cable-stayed bridge in north-central Vietnam to take photos on Monday, obstructing traffic and putting themselves at risk for accidents.
The Cua Hoi Bridge connecting the north-central Vietnamese provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh has allowed the circulation of rudimentary vehicles, motorcycles, scooters, cars under 15 seats, and trucks under 1.5 metric tons for its temporary operation from February 6 to March 15.
The temporary operation despite a 1.1 km under-construction section at the southern end of the bridge in Nghi Xuan District, Ha Tinh is meant to meet traveling demand during the Lunar New Year holiday.
However, what went beyond expectations was that the new bridge attracted a large number of people, who violated traffic rules and guidelines, stopped on the bridge, and dangerously walked to the middle of the road to take pictures and selfies.

There was a time when the number of people gathered on the Cua Hoi Bridge exceeded 700, according to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s observation.
They crossed the road on the bridge, stood or sat on the roadway or side railings for selfies, without a sense of how dangerous their activities were.
These people and their vehicles blocked traffic on the bridge, prompting local authorities to dispatch police forces to the scene to handle the situation.
But despite the presence of traffic police officers at the bridge, the people busy indulging themselves in taking photos did not promptly leave the place.
