Hanoi kicked off its large-scale decontamination mission on Monday morning in a bid to stall the spread of COVID-19.

Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Dinh Tien Dung had requested local military forces to carry out the disinfection during a virtual meeting on Sunday.

Following Dung’s order, relevant units under the Ministry of National Defense and the Hanoi Capital High Command arranged 180 soldiers and 15 specialized vehicles for the fumigation drive on Monday, with Hoan Kiem, Dong Da, Hoang Mai, and Chuong My Districts being the first target locations.

From 8:00 am the same day, the specialized vehicles began touring many streets in Hoan Kiem District to spray disinfectant.

The disinfection came as the novel coronavirus has caused 903 infections in Hanoi since April 27, when the pandemic’s fourth wave struck the Southeast Asian country, according to the Ministry of Health’s data.

The capital city logged 21 more infections from eight clusters in ten districts on Monday morning, according to the municipal Department of Health.

From Friday last week, the Ho Chi Minh City Command, in conjunction with two chemical engineering units from the 7th Military Region and the Army’s Chemical Corps, has also run a week-long disinfection campaign across the southern metropolis, which registers thousands of patients every day.

Vietnam had documented 101,173 COVID-19 cases by Monday afternoon, with 10,342 recoveries and 524 deaths, since the respiratory disease first hit the country in early 2020.

In this fourth wave, 97,421 local infections have been recorded in 62 out of 63 provinces and cities, including 62,139 cases Ho Chi Minh City.
