Police in Ho Chi Minh City have detained and launched legal proceedings against a drunk woman who drove a Mercedes-Benz into ten motorcycles at a red light, killing one person and injuring four others in Thu Duc City on Sunday.
A representative from the Ho Chi Minh City police department confirmed on Tuesday that they had decided to initiate legal proceedings and detain Nguyen Thi Thanh Ngoc, a 41-year-old resident of Thu Duc City, on charges of violating road traffic regulations as stipulated in the 2015 Penal Code.
At 5:20 pm on Sunday, Ngoc was driving on Vo Nguyen Giap Boulevard toward Dong Nai Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City.
When her car reached the intersection of Vo Nguyen Giap Boulevard and Le Van Viet Street in Thu Duc City, the traffic light was red.

Ngoc attempted to brake to stop, but mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead, causing the car to lurch forward and crash into ten motorcycles.
Among the injured, H.T.T.T. was in a more serious condition and taken to Gia Dinh People's Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for emergency treatment. However, by about 6:00 am on Monday, she succumbed to her injuries.
Police, in coordination with specialized units, have examined the scene, gathered evidence, and questioned those involved.
Ngoc was found to be driving under the influence but tested negative for drugs.
