A fatal traffic accident occurred in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday as a Mercedes-Benz car driven by a woman crashed into ten motorcycles at a red light, killing one person and injuring six others.
On Monday morning, a representative from Gia Dinh People's Hospital confirmed that the critically injured woman from the crash had succumbed to her injuries
The victim, H.T.T.T., 28, a resident of neighboring Dong Nai Province, was initially taken to Eastern People Military Hospital along with six other victims.
Due to her critical condition, T. was later transferred to Gia Dinh People's Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, where she passed away despite intensive medical care.
The accident occurred around 5:00 pm on Sunday, involving 41-year-old N.T.T.N., who was found to be driving under the influence and traveling in the wrong lane, according to local police reports.
At that time, N. was driving on Vo Nguyen Giap Boulevard toward Dong Nai Province when she suddenly veered into the motorcycle lane and crashed into multiple motorcycles idling at a red light near the Thu Duc intersection in Thu Duc City, a district-level unit of Ho Chi Minh City.
The impact sent several victims and motorcycles tumbling onto the road. One victim was thrown onto the car hood, carried about 30 meters, and then fell down. The scene was strewn with ten deformed and damaged motorcycles.
One victim, Hieu, described hearing a loud noise just before being struck.
“I was waiting at the red light when I heard a loud crash behind me. I turned around and saw a white car speeding toward us, hitting multiple motorcycles. I couldn't react timely and was hit,” he recounted.
After the crash, N. stepped out of her car in a panic and broke down in tears. She was later taken to a nearby police station.
N. presented a valid driver's license to officers and claimed she had mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, leading to the accident, according to VnExpress.
Subsequent tests revealed that she had a breath alcohol concentration of 0.6 milligrams per liter, far beyond Vietnam’s zero-tolerance limit for driving under the influence.
A source told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that on Sunday, N. consumed alcohol before driving, reportedly distressed over family matters.
As of Monday morning, authorities were still taking N.'s statements to complete legal procedures.
