Vietnamese billiards duo Tran Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2025 World Championship 3-Cushion National Teams in Viersen, Germany, after drawing with Sweden on Saturday morning (Vietnam time).
The Vietnamese duo entered the match with several advantages.
A draw was enough for Chien and Vinh to advance, and they also benefited from Sweden’s absence of veteran player Michael Nilsson, who was sidelined for rehab.
His replacement, Nalle Olsson, struggled to fill the gap.
Vinh quickly capitalized, defeating Olsson 40-19, securing at least a draw for Vietnam and confirming their spot in the next round.
The remaining match between Chien and Swedish legend Torbjorn Blomdahl remained closely contested.
Chien led 19-9 at one point, but Blomdahl fought back with a series of strong points to lead 24-20.
The two battled through the final series, with Blomdahl missing several opportunities to close the match.
Ultimately, the Swedish legend triumphed 40-34.
Vietnam finished the group stage with one win and two draws, ranking second and advancing to the quarterfinals.
Belgium, with two wins and one draw, topped the group.
Chien and Vinh will look to defend the title they won in 2024, marking Vietnam’s first-ever World Championship 3-Cushion National Teams victory.
The quarterfinals are set to begin at 5:00 pm on Saturday (Vietnam time).
