Vietnamese teacher disciplined, fined nearly $150 for hitting students

Findings confirmed that she used a damaged electrical cord to hit students and threatened them with a chalkboard eraser

A teacher in Buon Ma Thuot City, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, has been fined VND3.75 million (US$146) and officially reprimanded after an investigation confirmed she physically punished students with an electric cord, authorities said on Tuesday.

The teacher, identified as B.T.X., was the homeroom teacher of class 5D at Ly Tu Trong Elementary School.

Following complaints from parents and media reports, the Buon Ma Thuot People's Committee launched an investigation into allegations that she used improper methods to discipline students.

Findings confirmed that X. used a damaged electrical cord to hit students and threatened them with a chalkboard eraser.

She also asked students to prepare crumpled pieces of paper to place in their mouths if they talked in class.

As a result, the city’s administration fined the teacher VND3.75 million for her behavior.

She submitted a written self-criticism acknowledging her misconduct.

Late last month, the school decided to remove X. from her teaching and homeroom duties for the remainder of the school year.

The school subsequently held a disciplinary hearing, resulting in an official reprimand on March 17.

The investigation found insufficient evidence to support some other parental complaints, but confirmed the inappropriate physical punishment.
