40°C hot spell to roast Hanoi

The recent heat wave shows no sign of decline in the northern region of Vietnam, especially in Hanoi where it has increased its intensity, ‘incinerating’ the northern hub with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius, according to a national weather forecast center.

The extreme climatic condition unleashed its full power on Tuesday, roasting Hanoi with a peak at 40 degrees Celsius, as recorded by the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

The hot spell, which began on Monday, is a sequel to the warm low pressure system originating from the west of the country, local news website VietNamNet said in its Tuesday report, citing NCHMF, and adding that provinces in northern and central regions had been severely affected.

The weather phenomenon began impacting multiple districts of the capital city on Monday, with highs between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius, including a peak of over 39 degrees Celsius on Lang Street, the weather forecasting center said.

According to local residents, the weather event is much more severe than that earlier this month as the atmosphere remains hot in the evening and at night, with temperatures hovering at around 33 degrees Celsius until 10:00 pm.

The heat wave is forecast to heat the capital to between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, with 10-18 hours of temperature consistently over 35 degrees Celsius, NCHMF said, adding that squally rain will also lash the north, with downpours predicted to sweep mountainous areas.

To counter the heat, Nguyen Duc Chung, chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, has urged local departments to carry out immediate health and safety measures as well as maintaining power supply to households and local water pumping stations.

The heat is predicted to dissipate in the northern region and become less intensive in central areas by Thursday, the weather forecast center said.
