Vietnam is likely to spend VND1,757 billion (US$78 million) on the organization of the 2021 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, according to the plan submitted to the central government by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The expenses are for repairing and upgrading current sports facilities in Hanoi, the games’ main venue, and the surrounding areas, as well as for paying organizational fees.

It is expected that Vietnam will earn VND190 billion ($8.4 million) mainly from television rights, food and accommodation paid by national delegations, and sponsorship.

The 31st edition of the SEA Games is scheduled to be held from late November to December in 2021 in Hanoi and other surrounding locations including Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, and Hoa Binh.

The tournament will have the participation of around 20,000 people, including 7,000 athletes.

Vietnam will offer competition in 30-36 sports including athletics, aquatic sports, 23 sports belonging to the Olympic and Asian Games, and an additional five sports Vietnam is good at: chess, pencak silat, vovinam, sepaktakraw, and petanque.

Repairing stadiums, other sports facilities

The central government has banned relevant agencies from building new sports facilities.

Instead, the 2021 SEA Games tournament is to be organized in Hanoi, which has the best sports infrastructure in the country at present.

According to the plan prepared by the sports ministry, the total cost for repairing and upgrading sports facilities would reach VND803 billion ($35.7 million) with the remaining VND954 ($42.4 million) for organizational fees.

The ministry plans to build up to ten new tennis courts that meet international standards with the construction of the facilities to be funded by private investors.

The fees for organizing the tournament include VND383 billion ($17 million) for competition equipment, VND261 billion ($11.6 million) for transport, logistics and public service support, and VND110 billion ($4.9 million) for information and communications.

Other expenditures are for doping checks at VND31 billion ($1.4 million), security at VND44 billion ($2 million), the operation of a management center at VND20.2 billion ($898,000), reception at VND19.8 billion ($880,000), and the opening and closing ceremonies at VND50 billion ($2.2 million).

In addition, Vietnam will spend around VND750 billion ($33.3 million) on training 1,000 athletes in 18 sports to prepare for the host nation to win big at the tournament.
