A young boy in Dak Lak Province in Vietnam’s Central Highlands was safely rescued after falling into a deep hole when the toilet floor at his kindergarten collapsed on Monday.

Five-year-old Nguyen Van An was relieving himself at the Krong Ana kindergarten after lunch, when the pit latrine suddenly sank into the ground, sending the kid down to a five-meter hole, according to the schoolhead Le Thi Huong.

A teacher later found out the incident and immediately notified local police officers as well as the boy’s family.

“An was found buried under the debris when we arrived at the scene,” Bui Thi Net, the boy’s mother, recounted.

“My husband decided to plunge into the hole and rescue him.”

The young victim was admitted to the hospital with the back of his head bleeding, according to Huynh Nhu Dong, a senior doctor of the Dak Lak General Hospital.

An suffered occipital skull fractures and pelvic fracture, Dong said, adding that the patient’s condition has stabilized following treatment.

Leaders of the school and representatives of the district’s education office arrived at the infirmary to get updates on the health condition of the young boy on Tuesday morning.

According to the kindergarten officials, the school’s restrooms and several other facilities previously belonged to the Krong Ana Elementary School and have not been renovated for nearly a decade.
