Police in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa have arrested two Russian men for using fake bank cards to steal money from multiple ATMs.
Police officers detained Russian national Troian Aleksei, 32, on Tuesday night after catching him red-handed using a bogus ATM card to withdraw money from a branch of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) on Ngo Gia Tu Street in Nha Trang City, which is the provincial capital.
They then discovered he was carrying 14 ATM cards and VND24 million in cash, before collecting a further 216 ATM cards, VND61 million and over US$1,200 in cash following a search of the hotel where the Russian man was staying.
Initially, Aleksei confessed to using those fake ATM cards to withdraw money from BIDV and Techcombank, another Vietnamese lender.
On the same night, Khanh Hoa police apprehended Kotets Viacheslav, 29, for stealing cash from multiple ATMs on Monday and Tuesday.
Police said they seized 25 ATM cards, over 15,900 euros and nearly VND25 million from Viacheslav.
According to news website VnExpress, Aleksei told police that Viacheslav was his accomplice, and that they had entered Vietnam recently to steal money from ATMs using counterfeit bank cards supplied by another foreign man, who would receive half of the cash they had plundered.
Aleksei told officers the two men had withdrawn hundreds of millions of Vietnamese dong with those counterfeit cards, the newswire reported.
Police have launched a further investigation into the case.
