Police in the northern Vietnamese province of Phu Tho have arrested two suspects for inflicting injuries on others during a mass gang assault on Tuesday evening.
Officers affirmed on Thursday that they carried out an emergency arrest on Le Xuan Thao and Nguyen Huu Tien, part of a group of about 50 men that attempted to assassinate an entire family.
Nearly 10 other suspects were also summoned to the police station to support the investigation and provide clarification of the cause of the assault.
The large group of young men, armed with knives, machetes, and metal batons arrived at a house on Nguyen Trai Street in Au Co Ward, before hunting down and attacking the people inside and damaging their property.
Three victims who suffered major injuries were Nguyen Tuan Dung, 23, Chu Thanh Son, 20, and Cao Van Tuan, 20.
Dung suffered brain injury, a fractured forehead, and a broken left forearm, while Son and Tuan received several cuts on their faces.
An initial probe showed that Thao and Tien, along with some other attackers, directly assaulted the three victims.
According to a police file, the cause of the violence arose from an existing conflict between one of the attackers, Nguyen Ngoc Thu, 28, and the victims’ friend Nguyen Tuan Linh, 22.
Thu stated that he asked 39-year-old Nguyen Thuy to lead the massive group of thugs to "teach Linh a lesson."
The gang decided to hunt for Linh on the day of the incident but moved on to Dung’s house after finding Linh was not home.
Thuy’s men later arrived at the residence in three cars and carried out the attack.
Local police were notified of the incident, but the group of assaulters escaped in their vehicles, leaving several weapons on the street, before officers arrived at the scene.
Investigators are working to clarify the role of Thuy, the organizer behind the violence.
