Man held for stealing property from Belgian tourist in Vietnam

Vietnamese police on Monday detained a 28-year-old man who stole a camera and a total sum of over US$2,600 from a Belgian visitor on Phu Quoc Island off southern Vietnam.

Nghiem stole these assets when the woman was sea-bathing, leaving them on a beach of the island, a district of the southern province of Kien Giang on January 4, 2015. He escaped after the theft but was arrested by a patrol police team of the island a day later. The police recovered all the assets Nghiem had stolen from the foreign woman, who stayed at Mai Phuong Hotel in Cua Can Commune.  Nghiem is a native of the north-central province of Ha Tinh but lives in Phu Quoc’s Duong Dong town. Phu Quoc, the largest island in Vietnam, is located in the Gulf of Thailand, about 40 km west of Ha Tien, a coastal town of Kien Giang.

The island is among the most attractive tourist destinations in Vietnam.
