Nearly 300 motorbikes and one car were burnt to the ground after a big fire partly raged a parking lot in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 8 on Saturday.

The flames were detected by passers-by at some 2:30pm and quickly spread. Dozens of local residents managed to douse the fire using water and fire extinguishers but did not succeed.

Afterwards, about 40 fire-fighters onboard seven fire trucks arrived at the scene located on Cao Lo Street in Ward 4. The inferno was put out one hour later.

According to initial information, the fire burnt down an area of approximately 600m2 out of total 1,800m2 and caused an estimated loss of VND2 billion or roughly US$100,000. Fortunately, more than 50 motorcycles had been successfully evacuated.

Initial investigations found that a fire at nearby landfill spread to the parking lot and set it on fire, according to local police.

Vu Trung Nhan, owner of the parking lot, told Tuoi Tre he hired the area at VND12 million or $600 per month to keep vehicles of local residents and pawnshops.
