-- Fines imposed on people engaging in extramarital relationship will be increased, according to a recently-announced draft decree by the Ministry of Justice. Accordingly, adulterous people will be fined from VND2 million to VND5million while former regulations require them to pay from VND200,000 to VND1 million. Also under the draft decree, the administrative fines for same-sex marriages will be removed.

-- 13 buses caught fire, 11 of them were burnt to the ground, while they were parked in a sports complex in Cao Lanh town in the southern Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap at 2am on April 9. The fire caused an estimated loss of VND800 million.

-- 94 people died and 114 others were injured from 194 traffic accident cases across the country on April 7-8, according to the Road and Railway Traffic Police Bureau.

-- A Vietnamese worker in Angola has been beaten to death by a group of strangers, a source told Tuoi Tre on April 8. The victim is identified as Nguyen Van Thuong, 38, hailing from Ky An district in the northern province of Ha Tinh.

-- A 5th grade female student in the southern Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang has committed suicide and left a suicide note.

Business:

-- The retail prices of petrol and oil were cut by VND450-VND500 per litre starting from 6pm on April 9 following a request from the Ministry of Finance.

Lifestyle:

-- Organizers of Da Nang Fireworks International Competition have decided not to invite local popular singer My Tam, who was said to demand US$6,000 for a song, to perform at the event. However, My Tam told local media via an email that the information was untrue because she did not sign any $6000 contract with the festival’s organizers.

Politics:

-- Vietnamese people at home and abroad have contributed their opinions to the draft amendments to the 1992 constitution, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said at a meeting held in Hanoi on Monday, said a VNA report.

-- Embassies of the two Koreas in Vietnam have vowed that their countries will take necessary measures to protect the lives and property of Vietnamese citizens who have been living and working there, said a VNA report.
