-- Nguyen Quang Dien, deputy chair of the People’s Committee of Ben Thanh Ward in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, said on Saturday the committee has launched inspections and detained several unregistered “xich lo” (three-wheeled vehicles) operating on streets closed to Ben Thanh Market following a Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper exposé, published earlier this week, of them blatantly ripping off their foreign passengers.

-- Ngo Quang Vinh, director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in the central city of Da Nang, told a Saturday meeting that the city has devised plans to turn itself into a destination for international cruisers and yachts. The city will also be among the destinations for the 2015-2016 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, an international sport event meant to promote tourism images of participating countries. The racers, to compete for 11 months, will depart from the UK, sweep through several countries in South America, Australia and Asia, enter Da Nang between January and March next year.
-- The People’s Committee of Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta has agreed to open a Can Tho-Bangkok air route. The municipal committee and Vietravel, a Vietnamese travel firm, had preliminarily consented to launch the new route on July 21, using Airbus 320 planes.

-- “Give2give,” a project meant to improve the English command among young, aspiring leaders, was recently launched at the American Center under the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City. The project is run by overseas Vietnamese alumni on American fellowships, and funded by the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative, U.S. President Barack Obama’s signature program designed to strengthen leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia.

-- According to the website of “YouFarm – Farm and Family,” a video competition for farmers around the world which is initiated by Bayer Group, a multinational chemical and pharmaceutical company, two of the short films shot by Vietnamese farmers have made their way to the competition’s Top 30 before being selected for official prizes. The global contest aims to improve public understanding of the role of farmers in today’s society.
