The Vietnamese national men’s football (soccer) team arrived in Myanmar in high spirits on Wednesday to prepare for a four-team competition, after beating Syria in an exhibition match on home soil a day earlier.
Along with hosts Myanmar, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Singapore will compete for the 2016 AYA Bank Cup in Yangon from June 3 to 6 in a straight knockout format tournament.
The Vietnamese will face Hong Kong first on Friday, immediately followed by the Myanmar-Singapore matchup.
The winners will face each other in the finals while the losers will compete for third place, with both matches scheduled for June 6.
The Myanmar tourney is a chance for Vietnam to prepare for the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup, a biennial football competition to be held later this year by the ASEAN Football Federation and contested by Southeast Asian national teams.
The Vietnamese players are full of confidence upon their arrival in Yangon yesterday, having beaten Syria 2-0 in a friendly in Hanoi on Tuesday.
Strikers Le Cong Vinh and Nguyen Van Quyet scored both goals in the first half to earn the home victory for the hosts.
Coach Nguyen Huu Thang, who began the Vietnam job in February, was praised for the victory against a strong side.
The 44-year-old coach will make use of the AYA Bank Cup to give his team the best possible preparation for the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup, scheduled to take place in Myanmar and the Philippines from November 19 to December 17.
Vietnam will start training at the Youth Training Center Stadium in Yangon at 3:00 pm Thursday.
