Police in Hanoi are set to investigate high-rise developer Muong Thanh Corporation, infamous for a series of law violations in localities across Vietnam.

During a meeting with the Hanoi People’s Council on Wednesday, Major General Doan Duy Khuong, director of the municipal Department of Police, asserted that the agency will probe Muong Thanh Corporation, run by Le Thanh Than.

Muong Thanh’s two subsidiaries, So 1 Dien Bien Construction Company and BEMES Production and Import Export JSC, are the two primary targets of the investigation.

According to Maj. Gen. Khuong, Muong Thanh has carried out 12 construction projects across the Vietnamese capital, all of which show signs of tax evasion and housing law violations.

“We received an order from the People’s Committee to review findings from the city’s inspectorate,” the police official said, adding that local officers will be in close coordination with the Ministry of Public Security during their probe.

“We are waiting for a decision from the public security ministry. If Hanoi police are allowed to handle the case, the investigation will be initiated next week,” he continued.

The ministry is holding inspection results from Muong Thanh’s violations in 21 localities across the country, Khuong added.

Speaking at the gathering, chairman of the Hanoi administration Nguyen Duc Chung stressed the city’s plans to impose stern punishments upon violators of construction laws.

Competent authorities previously penalized owners of facilities which violated certain regulations, Chung said, adding that they will also begin sanctioning the developers and companies responsible for constructing the buildings in the first place.

Several developers have even handed over houses and ownership documents to customers despite the violations, the chairman stated.

Regarding Muong Thanh’s violations, the corporation is responsible for offenses on sites dotting the length of the county.

In Hanoi, the firm’s low-cost apartment complex, named HH, contains 12 buildings from 36 to 41 stories  high, while their building permits only allow for 35 floors.

In the Central Highlands of Dak Lak, a Muong Thanh hotel was found to have been built without a permit in 2016.

In May 2017, the corporation was caught constructing 104 apartments on several floors originally designated for parking garages and other communal facilities at an apartment complex project in the central city of Da Nang.

Muong Thanh also has two high-rise projects that violate height limits in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa.

In the southern city of Can Tho, the company began the construction of a hotel while local authorities had only approved the establishment of its foundation.
