-- A Vietnamese delegation led by Rear Admiral Pham Hoai Nam, Commander of the Vietnam People’s Navy, is participating in the 9th ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting in Myanmar, which focuses on promoting the ASEAN naval teamwork in maintaining regional maritime security and preparing for an international ship parade in celebration of 50-year ASEAN in 2017.

-- The last victim in the coalmine accident in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Thursday, caused by the rupture of a deep underground water area that killed one worker and injured 10 others, remained unaccounted for as of the end of Friday, despite continued rescue efforts of over 1,000 people, local authorities reported.
-- Seven Vietnamese fishermen of the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on Friday reported to local authorities that a large Chinese ship numbered 46102 attacked them off Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago in the East Vietnam Sea and took away all equipment and aquatic products on board their fishing boat on Tuesday.
-- The Ho Chi Minh City-based Saigon Water Supply Corporation on Friday inaugurated a new facility, the Thu Duc 3 Water Plant, which can meet clean water demand for about 600,000 households in the city with a capacity of 300,000 m3 per day.
-- A five-star public toilet, equipped with air-conditioners, music and advanced sanitary equipment, was put into operation at Dan Sinh Market in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, on Friday, intended to better serve around 1,000 daily users, including foreigners.

-- Oil slumped to only US$40.62 a barrel on the world market on Friday, a multiyear low that strongly affects the economies of many countries, especially those depending much on crude oil exports like Vietnam, international experts said.
-- Seventeen out of the 35 samples of imported U.S. chicken products that were tested in July have been found containing some antibiotics, but well within the permissible levels, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Department of Animal Health reported. Nearly 46,000 tons of chicken products, of which 97 percent were cheap ones, were imported from the U.S. into Vietnam in the first seven months of this year.
-- U.S. dollar was sold at many Vietnamese banks, including ACB and Eximbank, at VND22,545 a greenback on Friday, VND105 higher than Wednesday’s price and only VND2 lower than the ceiling price of the State Bank of Vietnam. most banks yesterday bought the greenback at VN22,320-22,460 a dollar.
