A cabbie of an unlicensed taxi allegedly drove off together with belongings of a foreign customer who stopped half-way to withdraw cash from an ATM on a street in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday.

24-year-old Italian tourist Jacopo Brozzi reported to local police that when he got off a bus on Nha Trang - HCMC route on District 1’s Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street on Nov. 16, a cabbie showed up to offer him a ride.

Jacopo Brozzi asked the driver to take him to Saigon Sport Hotel on Bui Vien Street, District 1 in the Pham Ngu Lao backpacker’s area but the cabbie intentionally took a longer route.

When the taxi was traveling on Nguyen Van Cu Street in District 5’s Ward 2, Brozzi asked the driver to drop him at a Sacombank ATM to withdraw some cash but when the customer was busy at the ATM, the driver drove off along with his iPad, personal papers and VND80,000 (US$4) in cash.

Camera footage from the ATM showed that the taxi was an unlicensed one with a silver grey color and a green light box. Local police are investigating.
