Arrested soccer boss Nguyen Duc Kien’s clubs now risk being dissolved as few would dare buy them in this unfavorable financial climate, Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) officials said Wednesday.

Kien, considered a powerful figure in Vietnamese football, was nabbed at home Monday evening following allegations of illegal business activities at three of his companies.

Widely known to hold stakes in many major local commercial banks, Kien also acts as deputy chairman of the organizer of Vietnam’s two leading tourneys, V-League and the First Division.

A black shadow has cast on Kien’s two soccer teams, Hanoi Soccer Club in V-League and Hanoi Juniors in the First Division, ever since his unexpected capture.

Their coaches and players have explicitly expressed uncertainty about their future with the clubs, with some even saying point blank they wanted to leave.

“It would be truly hard for them to maintain operations,” a VFF official, asking to stay anonymous, said.

“It is possible that they will be disbanded because nobody dares to take them over at this moment.”

Le Hung Dung, vice chairman of VFF which supervises local soccer, explained it would be nearly impossible to find a person willing to spend a few million dollars to buy the two clubs and set aside up to two million dollars, an average for Vietnamese clubs, for annual operations in this difficult financial situation.

Dung revealed that many owners had even asked him to recommend those who could buy their clubs right before the end of V-League, which was last Sunday.

Local football officials have pledged to try their best to prevent any chaos from soccer in the wake of Kien’s arrest.
