Oil, rubbish of unknown origin wash ashore in central Vietnam

Oil, rubbish of unknown origin wash ashore in central Vietnam

Tuesday, February 14, 2017, 16:17 GMT+7

The coastline in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Nam has been found being polluted by oil spill and rubbish of unknown origin.

A nearly seven kilometer long section of the coast has been filled with concentrated oil spills, along with many types of garbage.

The clotted oil was about 0.5 to 10 centimeters in size while labels on the empty bottles indicated that they washed ashore from Hong Kong.

During an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday morning, Truong Van Chung, vice-chairman of the People’s Committee in Nui Thanh District, confirmed that local authorities were cooperating with relevant agencies to handle the pollutants.

The incident was reported to local authorities on the morning of February 6, Nguyen Vien, director of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said, adding that an inspection was carried out later the same day.

Several types of trash including used bottles, glasses, plastic bags and wrappers, as well as damaged fishing equipment, were spotted along the coast.

According to local residents, the oil spill and rubbish began to wash ashore prior to the Lunar New Year, which was on January 28.

Director Vien has urged local bodies to clean up the oil spill in a prompt manner to prevent it from melting under the heat and blending with the beach sand.

Competent agencies are working to trace the source of the pollutants.
