A series of cyclones accompanied by heavy downpours swept through the southern province of An Giang on Sunday, battering hundreds of houses as well as paralyzing regional traffic.
Heavy winds hit Thoai Son District and Long Xuyen City before sunrise, affecting local residents as they knocked down hundreds of homes and blew off dozens of roofs.
According to locals, trees along many streets were uprooted, immobilizing traffic flows in some places.
Pham Thanh Thai, secretary of the Party Committee of Long Xuyen City, said that 453 houses were damaged by the weather event.
Of these, 40 collapsed and the rest were damaged and had their roofs blown off, Thai said, citing a statistic.
“Residents whose homes collapsed will be supported with a new house each worth VND30 million [US$1,345] and VND6 million [$269] in cash,” he said, adding that those whose dwellings had their roofs torn off or damaged will be provided with VND1 million ($45) to VND3 million ($135) each.
Two hundred and ninety five houses in Thoai Son District were destroyed due to the climatic event, Duong Ngoc Lam, deputy chairman of the Thoai Son People’s Committee, said.
“Currently, police have helped repair 130 households,” Lam said, adding that local officials are enacting solutions to support the victims.
