Tran Thao Linh, from Vietnam National Television (VTV), won the TV Weather Forecast Award 2014 from the European Meteorological Society (EMS) at a ceremony in Prague, Czech Republic on Tuesday, for her forecast on Typhoon Haiyan last year.

Linh is the first Vietnamese to win such an award, according to VTV.

She is acting manager of the Meteorological Information Department, Weather and Disaster Broadcasting, and a producer of daily weather forecast programs and breaking news on disasters at VTV.

The forecast, “Breaking news: Haiyan set to make landfall in Vietnam,” produced by Linh, which was aired on November 9, 2013, defeated nine other video clips by representatives from nine countries to win the EMS TV Weather Forecast 2014.

Entries by Denislava Banova from Nova Broadcasting Group (Bulgaria) and Bo Yee Poon, an anchor on weather news programs for both CCTV News and Xinhua World News (China), received an Honorable Mention.

All three forecasts were shown as examples of good practice during the Media Session at the EMS Annual Meeting in Prague on Tuesday.

“The entry was a good mixture of forecast details and practical information for viewers as Super Typhoon Haiwan approached Vietnam,” EMS commented on Linh’s forecast work. “Producer Tran Thao Linh did an excellent job of putting the enormity of the typhoon in context by showing a video of the storm in the Philippines, and comparing it in size and strength to other well-known storms,” it elaborated.

“The parameters of the storm and its forecast track were delivered in a calm but authoritative tone. The presentation included examples of what residents could do to prepare for the impending storm’s landfall,” EMS concluded.

The EMS is a non-profit organization that aims to advance the science, profession and application of meteorology at a Europe-wide level for the benefit of the whole population.
