Vietnam has been relegated to play in group III of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone next year after losing 2-3 to Sri Lanka in the play-off on Sunday in Da Lat, the popular tourist city in the central province of Lam Dong.

Vietnamese tennis player Do Minh Quan beat Thangajan Dineshkanthan 3-0 in the first men’s single match on April 4. However, Sri Lanka leveled it 1-1 after Harshana Dodamanna defeated Nguyen Hoang Thien 3-0.

The following day, Sri Lanka led 2-1 after the men’s double Harshana Dodamanna / Sharmal Dissanayake beat Vietnamese duo Do Minh Quan / Le Quoc Khanh 3-0.

On Sunday, host Hoang Thien surpassed Sharmal Dissanayake 3-0 to level the aggregate result of 2-2 before his compatriot Do Minh Quan lost 3/6, 5/7, and 0/6 to Harshana Dodamanna in the fifth match.

Losing 2-3 on aggregate in the play-off, Vietnam will play in group III next year.

In February, Vietnam lost 2-3 on aggregate to Pakistan in group II of Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone before engaging in the relegation battle with Sri Lanka.

Despite the loss, the Vietnamese national tennis team was awarded US$5,000 by the Vietnam Tennis Federation.
