The 23-year-old Yu is the second Chinese woman to be crowned Miss World since 2007 when Zhang Zilin won the crown.

Miss Wales Sophie Mouldsand and Miss Australia Jessica Kahawaty were announced first and second runner-up, respectively.

Meanwhile, Miss Hoang My, who represents Vietnam at the competition, failed to make it to the top 15 though she had been named in the Top 40 Beach Beauty round before.

Yu, who is currently a music student, says she wishes to become a music teacher.

In the final Q&A round, she told the judges that she hoped to use the crown to make children around the world feel lucky: “When I was young I felt very lucky because so many people helped me and I hope in the future, I can help more children to feel lucky.”

Miss Brazil Mariana Notarangelo, Miss India Vanya Mishra, Miss Jamaica Deanna Robin, and Miss South Sudan Atong Demach are among seven finalists.
