The family of a British man who went missing last week on Vietnam’s Fansipan Mountain has put up a US$4,500 reward for finding their missing son.

Aiden Webb, a 22-year-old British national who has reportedly been missing on Fansipan Mountain in Sa Pa District of Lao Cai Province since Friday, is still nowhere to be found after nearly a week of thorough searching by local authorities.

At 3,143 meters above sea level, Fansipan Mountain is the highest peak in Indochina, made up of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, making it a popular tourist spot for adventure-loving visitors.

The man last made contact by phone with his girlfriend Bluebell Baughan, who has been his companion in a purportedly four-month trip to Vietnam on Friday, when Webb said he had gotten lost and injured himself after attempting to climb a difficult part of the mountain.

Baughan has provided information of Webb’s last location to the authorities, but the search so far has been in vain, as the rescue team could not find the victim anywhere near the given spot.

An emergency meeting was held on Tuesday morning between the authorities of Sa Pa District and the victim’s family to decide on a new rescue plan for Webb, according to Nguyen Ngoc Hinh, vice chairman of the Sa Pa People’s Committee, who was in charge of the rescue team.

The victim’s father and uncle have also arrived in Sa Pa to assist the search.

The authorities of Sa Pa said in the meeting that the district has mobilized over 100 men, many of whom were locals familiar with the area’s terrain, to widen the search zone.

All costs of the search are being covered by the district’s budget, according to Hinh.

An additional reward of VND100 million ($4,500) has also been put forward by the victim’s father Trever Webb for anyone who finds his son.

According to information provided by the victim’s family, Aiden Webb is a professional mountain climber who is passionate about conquering challenging terrains, and thus it is likely that the victim had moved to a different location after last making contact with his girlfriend.

It is also suggested that the man had fallen into one of the dangerous canyons of up to over one kilometer deep that cannot be reached without special equipment.
