Severe congestion frustrates travelers at major bridge in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta

Monday, January 30, 2017, 10:21 GMT+7

A serious traffic jam occurred at a major bridge in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta on the second day of the Lunar New Year, casing a several hour long delay for local travelers.

Congestion started at round 9:00 am on Sunday, the second day of the 2017 Lunar Year, at Rach Mieu Bridge, which connects Ben Tre and Tien Giang Provinces in the Mekong Delta.

The serious gridlock was a result of the large number of travelers during the festive day, placing heavy traffic pressure on the structure.

The situation was still not alleviated by 1:00 pm the same day despite efforts from local traffic police officers.

The traffic jam happened mainly on the lane for four-wheel vehicles while motorcycle lane was occasionally congested.

Local traffic police units had to stop vehicles from entering the bridge every 10 minutes to control the flow of traffic.

A similar congestion had also happened at Rach Mieu Bridge on the night of January 22 due to the large volume of traffic ahead of the Lunar New Year while the infrastructure has not been upgraded to meet the rising demand.
