An aircraft operated by national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines had to make an emergency landing in Hong Kong early Sunday morning due to a technical incident, the firm reported.

The plane, an Airbus 321, had taken off at the city’s Tan Son Nhat Airport at 12:30 am the same day (Vietnam time).   Initial investigations said a technical incident had occurred in the plane’s air ventilation system. After landing, the VNA representative office in Hong Kong arranged accommodations at hotels and the airport’s lounge for the passengers before they were taken to Fukuoka on another flight later the same day. On the same day, another VNA flight from Ho Chi Minh City to the central province of Thanh Hoa was delayed due to bad weather, the firm said. The unfavorable weather during the past few weeks has affected many flights of the carrier, VNA said.

On December 17, 2014,  the Vietnamese aviation authority set up a team to investigate the landing of a VNA plane in Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport that prompted hijacking scare, and also suspended the relevant flight crew.

The investigation’s result later showed that the Czech captain Pechanec Marek of Flight VN1266 mistakenly pressed the button  for the hijacking code (7500) instead of  emergency code (7700) when asking permission for an urgent landing due to a drop of pressure inside the plane while flying from Ho Chi Minh City to the northern town of Vinh on December 16.
