Torrential rain turns Ho Chi Minh City into ‘ocean’

Torrential rain turns Ho Chi Minh City into ‘ocean’

Wednesday, September 28, 2016, 13:51 GMT+7

Heavy downpours have inundated Ho Chi Minh City again, with a massive amount of rainfall on Tuesday, immediately following Monday’s chaos.

The one-hour downpour submerged districts in the southern metropolis well into in the evening as many places had not recovered from Monday’s rain, which turned the city into an ‘ocean.’

Many tried to escape the rain and ended up stuck  in gridlock with their vehicles suffering breakdowns due to rising floodwater.

In Thu Duc District, water ‘cascaded’ through streets and homes, breaking down the engines of bikes and cars.

At the Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City in Thu Duc, Tuesdays rain caused the basements of two buildings in the dormitory area to be flooded.

On Monday, 850 vehicles parked in the buildings basements were submerged in floodwater.

In District 2, water levels in many locations was high enough that children were seen swimming around during the evening rain. Floodwater on some streets, including Luong Dinh Cua Street, was still present on Wednesday morning.

The event also meant the electrical appliances of many residences broke down.

Tragically, an 18-year-old man was swept away and ended up drowning in the floodwater while crossing the Bac Hai Bridge in the southern province of Dong Nai, the Bien Hoa City People’s Committee, said.

According to Le Thi Xuan Lan, a Ho Chi Minh City-based meteorologist, torrential rains are expected to lash the city and southern provinces for a few more days thanks to the large wind field of typhoon Megi heading to the southeast of China combined with  highly active southwesterly winds.
