Vietnam beat Hong Kong to reach final of Myanmar tournament

Vietnam beat Hong Kong 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in their opener game at the four-nation 2016 AYA Bank Cup in Myanmar on Friday.

While the Vietnamese did not fail any of their five attempts, two Hong Kong players missed their penalties in their first and fourth turns.

During official time, Mckee took Hong Kong to a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute, but Vietnam’s star striker Cong Vinh netted the equalizer only ten minutes later.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Cong Vinh attempted to score on a header, but eventually scored the 2-1 goal with the ball hit his shoulder.

Mckee scored his second goal in the 77th minute to send the match to penalties.

In the second clash of Friday, Singapore beat hosts Myanmar 1-0 .

With only four contenders, the Friday’s matches are in fact semifinals of the tournament thanks to its straight knockout format.

Vietnam will face Singapore at the finale, while Hong Kong adn the hosts will compete for third place, with both matches slated for June 6.

The Yangon competition is a chance for Vietnam to prepare for the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup, a biennial football competition to be held later this year by the ASEAN Football Federation and contested by Southeast Asian national teams.
