Air France strike affects 1,000 Vietnam Airlines passengers

Air France strike affects 1,000 Vietnam Airlines passengers

The ongoing Air France pilot strike has affected a number of flights and more than 1,000 passengers of Vietnam Airlines, the Vietnamese carrier said Friday.

The affected flights are those connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with Paris under a codeshare agreement between Vietnam Airlines and Air France, according to the carrier.

A codeshare agreement, also simply called a codeshare, is an aviation business arrangement where two or more airlines share the same flight.

The Vietnamese airline added that its flights from Paris to other European destinations were also being impacted by the Air France crisis, which began on September 15 and is expected to end on September 30.

Nine Vietnam Airlines flights between Paris and Ho Chi Minh City were cancelled between September 16 and 28, while one flight on the route had to be delayed for a day on September 21.

This has affected more than 1,000 passengers, according to Vietnam Airlines.

The carrier said it is contacting Air France for further information about the pilot strike so it can determine how to serve its passengers.

The French flag carrier on Friday sought to bring the costly strike, now in its 12th day, to an end, after a series of proposals were backed by the company's board and French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, according to Reuters.

Air France told the pilots it would lift a limit on the size of the Transavia France fleet, stick to Boeing 737 aircraft, introduce co-existing contracts for Air France pilots who volunteer to fly for the budget unit, and have a single seniority list.

"Air France believes that this balanced solution to develop Transavia France should be enough to end this strike, which is extremely costly and damaging to the company, its customers and its staff," Air France said in a statement.

The Air France strike, which is costing the airline US$25 million a day, came in response to the carrier’s recent announcement of a billion-dollar plan focused on expanding Air France-KLM's Transavia low-cost subsidiary.

Since Transavia pilots will work on a different and less lucrative employment contract, Air France flight crews are demanding that all of the company's pilots work under the same compensation scheme, according to Business Insider.

Annual compensation for Air France pilots start at $100,000 and can reach as high as $300,000, according to the Wall Street Journal.
