Muggers stop cabs, rob passengers on way to airport in Vietnam

Police in the south-central Vietnamese province of Khanh Hoa are hunting for a group of suspects who stopped taxis and robbing passengers aboard on their way to a local airport.

Colonel Nguyen Ba Doan, chief of the Department of Police in Cam Ranh City in Khanh Hoa, affirmed on Tuesday that they were searching for the suspects who ambushed local cabs and mugged boarding passengers.

Within only 25 minutes, the gang of robbers attempted three raids on such vehicles when they were traveling on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street from Nha Trang, another city in Khanh Hoa, to Cam Ranh International Airport, located in the namesake town.

According to initial investigation, the criminals conducted their illegal acts between 1:30 and 1:55 on the morning of May 28.

Reports of the attacked cab drivers showed that two men blocked the road with their motorcycle.

As the cabs slowed down, the suspects covered the vehicles’ windshields with spray paint and broke the car windows with rocks to threaten and force the passengers to hand the robbers all of their possessions.

The gang’s first two attempts were failure as the taxi drivers managed to escape after a high speed chase.

However, in their third trial, 37-year-old cabbie Huynh Anh Vu could not avoid the robbers, resulting in his vehicle being damaged and his passengers being mugged.

The suspects took VND2 million (US$89), along with several personal documents, from the travelers before sprinting back to Nha Trang City.
