Over 60 people died in traffic accidents that happened across Vietnam between February 7 and 9, which were Lunar New Year festival days, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee. The committee cited police statistics that 104 traffic crashes occurred during the period, when Vietnamese people celebrated the Lunar New Year, killing 64 people and injuring 98 others. The festival officially began on February 8 but festive preparations had started one week before and the celebratory atmosphere will linger for another week after that date. On February 7 alone, which was Lunar New Year’s Eve, 23 people died in 34 traffic accidents that also wounded 30 pedestrians. One day later, 32 traffic accidents claimed the lives of 21 people and left 30 others injured. Thirty-eight crashes happened on Tuesday, killing 20 people and causing 38 others to sustain injuries. The traffic safety committee said that the number of accidents and their resulting deaths and injuries dropped during those festive days against the same period last year. Congestion was also rampant during the three days, as a large number of people got back to their hometown from big cities for Lunar New Year celebration, the committee said. It added that police should strictly enforce a government fiat to crack down on speeding, drunk-driving, and those failing to wear crash helmets when driving their bikes in the coming festive days.
