High tide submerges HCMC, cold air affects north

High tide submerges HCMC, cold air affects north

Friday, November 16, 2012, 16:04 GMT+7

The 1.58 meter high tide submerged a lot of streets in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday while a tropical depression in the East Sea has been weakened with a cold front affecting northern provinces. The tide level was just 2 cm lower than the level previously predicted by the Southern Hydro-meteorological Station, local authorities said. At 5:20 pm, the high tide caused by the rising Saigon River began to overflow in the Phu Dinh Quay area in Ward 16, District 8. About 30 minutes later, this area was under 50 cm of water, causing many vehicles to break down and blocking traffic there. The same situation was seen in Districts 2, 7 and 8 and Nha Be and Binh Tan Districts, where many streets were seriously inundated, such as Luong Dinh Cua, Truong Dinh Hoi, Pham Huu Lau, Le Van Luong, Nguyen Huu Tho, Dao Su Tich, Nguyen Binh and An Duong Vuong. Meanwhile, the tropical depression in the East Sea has weakened after entering the sea area between Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Ca Mau provinces yesterday evening, the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center reported. However, the depression has caused medium to heavy rains in southern provinces and other localities from Binh Thuan Province to Da Nang City. Meanwhile, a cold front has moved towards northern Vietnam, causing cold weather and rains there. Therefore, the temperature in the region may be reduced by 5-6 degrees Celsius for 2-3 days, the center said. Specifically, the temperature in many northern mountainous areas will go down to 10-12 degrees Celsius, while that in other areas will be higher at 15-18 degrees.
