Two men have been arrested for attacking the police officers who had tried to stop them from violating traffic laws in the north-central province of Nghe An.

The two are Dinh Van Chien, 30, and Nguyen Van Muoi, 37, with blood alcohol concentrations exceeding the permitted level, were captured after returning to where they had been found violating traffic laws to attack the police with knives.

Major Dao Hong Nguyen, head of the traffic police division in Nam Dan District, Nghe An, said his unit had handed over the two men, their motorbike and knives to the criminal police bureau for detention and investigation.

According to Major Nguyen, a team under his division on Friday failed in an attempt to stop the two men from riding a motorbike without compulsory helmets in Van Dien Commune.

After crashing into Lieutenant Nguyen Cong Quan, who pulled over the two men for an inspection, to run away, they returned to the scene about 15 minutes later on foot, wielding knives, for an assault on the police officers there.

They were apprehended after stabbing Captain Nguyen Van Hoi, the chief of the team, causing a light injury to his hand.
