Wednesday, June 17, 2015, 11:50 GMT+7

A Vietnamese fishing boat from the central province of Quang Ngai on Tuesday reported that a Chinese ship robbed it of property worth US$13,780 when it was operating off Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago on Sunday.

>> Fishery association condemns Chinese ships’ attacks on Vietnamese boats This is the third attack by Chinese ships on Vietnamese fishing boats from the province’s Binh Chau Commune since June 7, said Nguyen Thanh Hung, deputy chairman of the Binh Chau People’s Committee and chairman of the local Fishery Association. These attacks have injured two fishermen and caused damage totaling about VND1.05 billion ($48,150). At 9:00 am on June 14, a ship coded QNg 90205 TS was fishing off the archipelago when a Chinese vessel approached it, Hung said, citing Nguyen Van Quang, the ship owner. Sailors from the foreign ship boarded the local vessel and then took away about five metric tons of aquatic products, along with an Icom walkie-talkie and a positioning system.   Worse, they also destroyed fishing gear of the local boat, Quang said, adding that he had to borrow equipment from other ships to continue fishing in the waters. The attack caused total damage of approximately VND300 million ($13,780). Hung said he had reported to provincial competent agencies about the incident, the third since June 7, when the first case occurred. On that day, a Chinese ship chased and then fired its water cannon at another fishing boat from Quang Ngai, QNg 90369, when the Vietnamese ship was operating about four nautical miles off Bom Bay Island, part of Hoang Sa.The powerful water cannon caused Bui Tan Doan, 23, and Cao Xuan Ly, 42, two of the 13 fishermen on board the local ship, to fall and get injured, according to the boat owner and captain, Nguyen Trung Kien, 42. Ly suffered injuries to the head while Doan broke the ankle of his left leg, doctors said, adding that it will take three months for Doan to recover. The Quang Ngai Province Fishery Association and the provincial Fishermen Support Fund have given the two victims a total of VND8 million ($370) as initial support. The second attack happened at about 4:00 pm on June 10, when four Chinese ships suddenly appeared and surrounded a Vietnamese boat that was fishing also off Bom Bay Island, Nguyen Van Phu, 29, the owner and captain of the local vessel said. The foreign ships, in white paint and numbered 589, 3103, 64501 and 35101, then sent two speedboats carrying six people to approach the Vietnamese ship, Phu said.

They forcefully boarded the local ship, coercing all 11 Vietnamese fishermen on board to move all aquatic products – about six metric tons – from their ship to the Chinese vessels, the captain said. The Chinese also took away other property including two fish detectors, a positioning system, an Icom walkie-talkie, five tanks of oil, diving clothes and other instruments. They did not forget to cut seven air hose reels, an anchor line and other tools, before leaving at 7:00 pm the same day. The total damage caused by the attack amounted to about VND750 million ($34,400), according to an estimate by the Sa Ky Border Guard Station in Quang Ngai.
