Samsung halts sales, recalls Galaxy Note 7 in Vietnam over phone explosion reports

Samsung halts sales, recalls Galaxy Note 7 in Vietnam over phone explosion reports

Sunday, September 04, 2016, 10:52 GMT+7

Samsung Vietnam has said that all sales of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in the country would be ceased, and that purchased devices would be recalled following global reports of battery malfunctions that leave the phones fire-prone.

Vietnam’s business of South Korean electronics giant Samsung announced its plan on Saturday to halt all sales of its flagship Galaxy Note 7 phones in the Vietnamese market, while urging customers who had purchased the model to exchange for new ones free of charge.

The news came weeks after the phone was unveiled, and one day after the company’s president of mobile communications business Koh Dong-jin made an official announcement of a recall in ten markets, including South Korea, the U.S., and Vietnam.

As of last Thursday, there had been 35 customer reports worldwide of Note 7 phones exploding while charging, the cause of which has been said by the company to be battery cell problems.

The company said in a press release that it was carrying out a strictly monitored investigation to determine the source of defective batteries.

“However, as customers’ safety is our absolute priority, we have decided to halt all sales of Galaxy Note 7 products,” the announcement by Samsung Vietnam reads.

Those who have already purchased the phone in Vietnam may contact the nearest authorized customer support center or dial the free hotline 1800 588 889 for assistance.

According to Samsung, over 2.5 million Note 7 phones had been shipped since its introduction in August, though the firm refused to disclose the cost for the massive global recall.
